What is my creative approach as an Architectural Photographer?
With a background as an Architect I appreciate the amount of hard work and effort that goes into the final result of a finished building. The hours spent between the client and design team, rationalizing spaces, specifying components and deciding on the material finish can often be a long but rewarding process. The photographs I take aim to capture those decisions made, expressing the craftsmanship, material quality and connection between spaces.
How long does a photography shoot take?
Typically, something like a domestic house would take half a day to shoot but this all depends on the size and level of detail required in the photography brief.
What type of buildings do you photograph?
Mainly buildings and structures with high architectural quality. My work has been commissioned by various bodies within the construction industry including Architects, Contractors, Mechanical & Electrical Engineers, Structural Engineers, End Users, Homeowners and more. A variety of buildings have been submitted for RIBA Awards, AABC Awards, LABC Awards and more.
How far will you travel to take photos?
Depending on the project, as far as it takes me. As an Architectural Photographer I am primarily based in Cambridge and so central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex, Kent and Greater London are common areas. If a visit requires an overnight stay then this will be identified in the initial client brief. My photography has taken me all over the United Kingdom and further afield across Europe where I travel often.
Is there any prior information required?
Setting up an online meeting or telephone conversation to discuss the building before my visit is often a useful exercise. This gives you the opportunity to talk through what you would like out of the photo shoot, identifying any key areas, looking at building plans and identifying the best time of day to shoot, providing me with a better understanding of the subject. It is often beneficial to have a guided tour at the start of my visit if possible before I explore the area at free will.
How do I get the best out of the architectural photography shoot?
Preparation of the spaces, both internally and externally are key. Often it may be useful on larger projects to have the rooms prepared by an interior decorator to establish a fitting theme between the furniture and architecture. On smaller projects this can be done by the lead designer or client and can be tweaked at the start of my arrival. I always go by the ‘less is more’ principle to express the architecture that I am photographing.
What happens after the architectural photography shoot?
After my visit I will need time to process the images. I usually filter out the better shots and provide a proof sheet for you to view with basic light and colour corrections. From here I usually ask that you select your favourites before I make further edits such as removal of small items in Photoshop.
